Get a Remington M700 target tactical in . 308 and buy a Leupold scope. That is the ultimate scope and rifle combination. Savage rifles are only decent quality and bushnell makes a range of different quality scopes so its possible that it is a bad scope. Leupold makes amazing scopes that all branches of the military use because of the quality of these scopes. The Remington M700 is most likely the best bolt-action rifle in existence.
That is a pretty good deal. The Savage is a real value for the money, I expect that you will find it is a reliable and accurate rifle. The Bushnell scope is a solid performer. It is not in the same class as a $1,000 Leopold scope, but for what you want, a simple hunting outfit, it will be plenty good enough. Point of fact, there are more Bushnell scopes on hunting rifles than there are Leopold’s.
Sounds like a decent price for a decent rifle to me. You can always replace the scope and mounts if you don’t like them. My nephew recently got a Mossburg ATX with scope for $299. It holds zero so far. You can’t see . 30 bullet holes at 100 yards but he should be able to see a deer and pick out a spot on it to shoot at from 200 yds.
