True to form, just like I called it, even before the New Year could began in earnest three more Black men were lynched in America. Somehow, just saying I told you so doesn’t really do it for me. On New Year’s Eve, Johannes Mehserle a White police officer shot Oscar Grant Jr. a 22 year old Black man in his back, killing him instantly as he lay prone and unarmed on a train platform in Oakland California. The incident was caught on tape. It became just the latest public lynching of a Black man in the United States, and it sparked several days of angry rebellion. 1 On that very same day, in Bellaire Texas a police officer shot the 23 year old son of Bobby Tolan, a once famous professional baseball player. Robbie Tolan ended up with a bullet lodged in his liver, only because as he stood in the driveway of his own home, a White police officer simply assumed that the car he actually owned was a stolen vehicle. 2 Then, hours later on New Year’s Day, nine police officers in New Orleans discharged their weapons 48 times and put 12 bullets into the back of yet another young unarmed African American man; 22-year-old Adolph Grimes was shot dead in a hail of gunfire just a few feet away from his grandmother’s home. A total of 14 bullets pierced violently through his body. 3 As we established in Part One http://www. associatedcontent. com/article/1259196/racist_atrocites_soar_as_ america_regurgitates. html?cat=9 of what has now regrettably become a two-part series, nobody has ever mandated that it requires a rope and a tree to lynch someone. All that it requires is the will and the means to take someone’s life. Now, with the election of the first Black man to the highest office in the land, it appears as if some White people across the country have simply lost their minds. Truth be told, not a year has actually gone by in recent memory without at least one Black man being summarily lynched in the United States. This type of racist violence has never really ceased to exist in this country. Today of course, in America nobody except for me that is, actually has the nerve to call this lynching anymore. But that’s just what it is. And I suspect that the name has been changed in order to ‘project’ guilt upon the innocent victim. That much is clear. Again, I’m just not buying it. We are living in the 21st Century people, and damnit, something has got to give! We as a nation are better than this! Nevertheless, all of a sudden with the election of Barack Obama it appears that the stakes for many people have simply grown much higher. We should all be mindful however, that we are being watched by Our Ancestors, and the future has its cynical eye upon us as well. Of this, I am quite sure. The election of a Black man to the most powerful office in the entire world has provided the ultimate humanization of Africans in America for the very first time during their long five-hundred-year sojourn here in the Western World. No longer can bigots White and Black simply mask their wayward beliefs behind the illusionary ritual perception of Black racial inferiority. As a consequence of Barack Obama’s election, this must now come to an end. In a sense, this ultimately is what Obama’s meaning is to all people of color. On November 4, 2008 in one fell swoop, Black people were undeniably humanized in America, and the central pillar of the racial argument has finally been dismantled forever. What this means nonetheless, is that the vocabulary of race shall have to change as well. The world as it truly exists can now hopefully be brought into sharper focus. The Black community today remains the only place in American life where a kind of extra-legal violence is permitted similar to that which is often associated with the most brutal dictatorships around the world. These are the only neighborhoods in the country where White police officers routinely shoot to kill unarmed citizens, often with no other real excuse than the mere fact that they dared to exist in the world. There is no other community within the United States where you can find an innocent 92 year-old grandmother who is literally gunned down in her own home; for absolutely no plausible reason at all. It is the only place where the press would dare attempt to justify this atrocity by trying to turn this woman into some kind of gun-toting grandmother; simply in order to distract us from what was really going on. 4 There is no other community in America where an entire elite class of Talented Tenth have summarily condemned and then completely abandoned the neighborhoods. This is the true reality whereby each day amidst economic blight and Para-military occupation, millions live their lives in the United States. Everyday, the scene is played out over and over again where foreign nationals in the ‘Hood’ run the legal-store trade safety indoors, while young unemployed Black males learn to survive in their own neighborhoods running an illicit trade outside. It must be a strange feeling being an outsider in your own neighborhood; simply because the entire world seems to believe that your community is this nation’s political dumping grounds. Death for these lost boys comes easy. Obama’s election signals a necessary change in the scope of our view towards racism and class bigotry out of the narrow confines of Civil Rights and towards a broader Human Right perspective. What we have learned is that over 200 death threats were actually reported against the life of the new President, and just within the early hours and days directly following his election racist atrocities spiked dramatically all over the country. 5 The rising rash of racist death threats continued to grow even until Inauguration Day. Moments later, Rush Limbaugh promptly told the millions who listen to his show, that he “hope[d] that the Obama Administration failed!” Now you tell me, just how patriotic was that? 6 Limbaugh’s comment alone could only serve to provide aid and comfort to untold legions bent upon the psychopathology of racial hatred. Perhaps though, questions of this nature are really best left for each of you to judge amongst yourselves. In the weeks leading up to the Inauguration, famed neo-Nazi radio commentator Hal Turner ratcheted up the hate speech and even went so far as to suggest on his Blog, that an unmanned aerial drone should be sent to drop explosives over the crowds gathering in DC. This kind of mass murder, killing that many people he said would simply be “a public service” To kill millions of African Americans whom he called “sub-human simians” and “mentally-ill Whites” at the Inaugural Celebration was simply prudent in his view. 7 Shamefully enough, Turner is certainly not alone. In just the last three months these homegrown terrorists have begun directing their bloodlust for Black life upon a number of unsuspecting innocent citizens. Hours after the November 4 election, three men Michael F. Jacques (24), Thomas A. Gleason Jr. (21), and Benjamin F. Haskell (22) claimed that it was simply anger over the election of a Black man to the Presidency of the United States that actually motivated them to pour gallons of gasoline on the predominantly Black Macedonia Church of God in Springfield Massachusetts; and then set it ablaze. A total of five firemen were subsequently injured fighting the flames. 8 Bishop Bryant Robinson Jr. who Pastors Macedonia Church of God called the actions of these three young men “irrational”: “This practice of racism undermines the full potential of our country! It wants to deny the contributions of the best of all our people!” 9 So true! After the arrest of the three men Reverend Georgeanne Greene, another prominent member of the clergy in Springfield, said that ultimately this incident helps us to bring bigotry out into the open and “allow[s] us to face head-on the level of racism in our country”. 10 However, maybe I am mistaken but I for one have not seen CNN, Fox News, or even MSNBC acting to put this scourge of racist bloodlust into the spotlight; or for that matter does there appear to be any effort at all to explore the true nature of what is actually going on. This of course is because racism in America is treated like some deformed child that we all have kept hidden in the basement. Of course we all know that it is there, but we really are not supposed to talk about it! It is meant to be regulated to some shameful somewhat fabled past that must now remain unspoken. Otherwise, you just might be accused of playing the race card! To be completely honest with you, to this very day I simply have no idea just what this bizarre phrase is actually supposed to mean. What I do know, is that innocent Black people keep dying. Another thing that we have discovered is that since being assigned Secret Service protection in the spring of 2007, which was much earlier than any other candidate in history, President Obama has received more death threats than all the other 43 presidents combined. It seems that there are a terribly large amount of people in this country who are seething with a potentially violent psychopathology, simply unable to get over the mere fact that the 44th President of the United States could have actually been owned by the first 27. This alone seems to be enough to actually elicit their utmost anguish and distain. Some have even spoken about states once again seceding from the nation. Yet, we should thoughtfully take notice that no Black people have been messing with them! Indeed, the most shameful aspect of all of this is that long after Jim Crow’s ultimate demise private property continues to be destroyed and innocent Black lives continue to be broken simply in order to bring out into the open what has always been prevalent enough for all to see anyway. Nevertheless, by and large with few exceptions the US corporate press has consistently refused to honestly cover this egregious cancer that continues to plague our society. If today, even in the face of mounting threats against the life of the President, the US Government still remains reluctant to protect American citizens from the vicious psychopathology of unsolicited racist violence, then these individuals and communities need to be referred for prosecution through the International Court of Justice at the Hague. Around the very same time, within just hours of the November 4 election, numerous incidents of racist violence were recorded in California and in New York as well. 11 As I documented in Part One there was simply a slew of racist incidents occurring; from cross burnings to Barack Obama’s likeness being ceremonially hung in effigy all throughout the country. Simply witnessing all of this unsolicited anger and intermittent violence turned against innocent African Americans, an alien landing here for the very first time might easily conclude that Black people had at one time actually enslaved White people in the West and not the other way around. Racism you must understand, is simply about ‘projection’. It is the psychopathology of turning one’s own ineptitude upon a convenient target. The weaker the individual, the more susceptible they are to its viral effects. Nevertheless, the question still remains: At this vital crossroads in our nation’s history, will this domestic terrorism finally be put to an end, or will America once again forfeit its soul and squander its promise in order to appease the crude psychopathology of the few? It is an enormous tribute to the character of our new President that all throughout the campaign season HRC, the woman destined to become the new Secretary of State, never for one minute attempted to tamp down the racist comments and actions of some of her most ardent supporters; nonetheless he picked her for his cabinet anyway. From Texas to Appalachia, let us not forget that initially it was the HRC Campaign who sought to mine and nurture racist sentiments all throughout the nation. From the curious amount of people who shamelessly attempted to liken Barack Obama to the monkey Curious George12, to the irate women who stood sentinel in the lobby of the Democratic National Committee shouting “Denver-Denver!” American racism was on center-stage in Campaign 2008. One women even had the audacity to proclaim “There throwing it all away and giving it all to an inadequate Black man!” The Clinton Campaign had seduced this bloodlust long before the general election had even begun. 13 Nonetheless, if HRC seemed indifferent to all of the mounting death threats and racist rhetoric that was being directed against her opponent, John McCain and Sarah Palin appeared to eagerly encourage it. When he was ultimately called on this by Congressman John Lewis, John McCain immediately attempted to flip the script; demanding that Obama denounce the congressman. 14 This of course was amazing enough in itself. Yet, it could easily be recognized as simply one of the latest tactics of political tricknology. Whenever you wish to deflect a racist act or expression, all you simply need to do is to accuse the person who complains the loudest of “playing the race card!” Suddenly, the victim now becomes the culprit, who ought to be ashamed for “playing the victim” in the first place! In other words, simply by telling the truth as he saw it, Father Phleger was painted as a racist himself. By the time that we got to the general election the McCain Campaign had this down to a science. It is only the newest political fad of talking loud and saying nothing! Nevertheless, both the Clinton and the McCain campaigns ultimately appeared to be playing to the very same crowd. Yes, in the end John McCain unlike Hillary Clinton actually sued for peace, and he conceded victory right on cue. However, true be told, this was a day late and a dollar short. Even after his own horrendous experience with dirty politics during the 2000 Presidential Campaign, in 2008 John McCain ran what could only be called a dishonorable campaign right to the bitter end. Make no mistake about it What is all of this really about? Why are there so many people who have a hard time adjusting to the new reality of a multi-cultural American society? Why have death threats been on the rise against the President of the United States? To understand all of this you have to begin at the beginning, because societies are actually like factories in the production of human personalities. During slavery, a Black woman was considered the legal property of her master, like a horse, or a table, or a shoe, and therefore she could not legally be raped. So it was that for centuries, White men had their way with Black women. After slavery, White men mostly in the south immediately began to cowardly project the almost Jack-the-Ripper-like attention that they had once wantonly displayed towards Black women’s bodies on to the Black male. From that very moment on, while millions of Black people were desperately scrambling simply to re-establish their randomly scattered families, until nearly a century later, the forged frightening specter of a fiendish Black male somehow on the prowl for the chastity of pure white women became the a prori excuse for wanton racist acts of inconceivably savage violence. By the turn of the Twentieth Century an average of at least one African American was lynched every week within the United States. Furthermore, perhaps the most inconspicuous aspects of the early history of marketing in America, is just how readily racist iconography acted in collusion with Jim Crow. Let us not forget that before Hitler could justify the wholesale victimization of the Jewish people, it was necessary for him to draw a sharp caricature of them within the minds of the German people. This was an enormous propaganda campaign that sought to render the Jewish people as conceivably inhuman as possible. Not since the savage days of rope and fire has there been such a profuse proliferation of racist iconography as was so casually on display during the 2008 Campaign. The American press failed to adequately cover this, and absolutely no mention was ever made of the origins of these terrible images that have brought so much misery and pain to millions of Black people. Mrs. Obama has done well to object to Bennie Babies being named after her precious children. In a sense, this nation has truly forfeited its ability to handle the marketing of the image of Sahsa and Mila when the press continues to hide the reality of this nefarious history in its reporting. The daily advertising of some of the most common everyday household products and popular consumer goods featuring the distorted image of Black men, woman and children, has been generously covered in my essay titled Black Orchid in the White House Garden http://www. blackcommentator. com/283/283_black_orchid_aschenge_guest. html It is an issue that bears more scrutiny than the limits of this essay will allow. Nevertheless, from foodstuffs featuring images of half naked Black children running through the woods, usually being chased and often being eaten by animals, to the proliferation of pictures of African American men and women with grossly distorted lips and bulging eyes, these where the images which helped to mitigate the medieval barbarism of Jim Crow violence. When Chip Saltsman, a recent candidate for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee says that sending members of his party a CD with a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” was simply some light-hearted humor, his indifference is strikingly similar to millions of sick racist White people who casually participated in several thousands gruesome acts of rope and fire during the Jim Crow era. Fredrick Douglass once summed up the American Dream this way: “The struggle for freedom in America he said is a struggle to free Black men’s bodies and White men’s minds. ” This is no less true today than it was 150 years ago. Douglass had the foresight to see this because he had witnessed first hand war and Reconstruction. He lived through the quick and shameful betrayal of the First Reconstruction and the Evil Birth of Jim Crow. Douglass was a true patriot, and he knew at that very moment that even after the long and painful centuries of Black enslavement, and the bitter recent years of such a divisive and fratricidal war, the nation had once again come to allow its lesser angels to prevail, and for this it would even if unwittingly forfeit the American Dream once more. Make no mistake about it, as we have witnessed in the past, when the American Dream is denied to one of us, it is denied to all of us. Now that a true progressive resides in the White House it shall take a newly energized and truly determined coalition of activists of every hue to once and for all secure the Dream before it is forfeited once again. History, past and future is watching us. ENDNOTES http://www. associatedcontent. com/article/1435400/death_threats_against_ obama_pg8. html?cat=9

Let’s die killing americans!
It is said that some countries find their security in the insecurity of others. Those in the west who think that they can keep their nuclear weapons, update them, build new generations of them and dictate to others that they shouldn’t have them are politically retarded. Real change, Mr President, must be based on justice and mutual respect. And frankly I don’t see any of these coming out of the United States.

Yes, we need to get beyond race, gender AND one’s sexuality as there is too much hate and judgement taking place. Amen!

Let me guess, the young man who was shot by the police officer (a highly trained Law Enforcement official) did no wrong. This is not “lynching,” but rather someone who broke the law and paid for it by not following a police officer’s orders/request.

Yeah it takes a racist to write about the topic. It is always the white mans fault. Lets not forget about all the unarmed whites that have died at the hands of blacks or would this be wrong to point out both sides. I know telling the truth would be wrong. We only want to believe what we want. There are never two sides to any story. The white man puts down the blacks and they are unable to get jobs. Well GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS AND GO FIND ONE. Working at Mcdonalds is better than nothing. For the racism — we all need to get a life and relize that the color of a person does not make the person. Black, white, hispanic is an exscuse to hate — just like this article is designed to hate. And we wounder what is wrong with the world. Sad to think that GOD wasted his time with the human race.

Kannur- land of the Theyyam-the dance of the Gods

SANJAI VELAYUDHAN Introduction: Kannur was earlier known by its anglicized name “Cranganore” or Portuguese name “Cannannore”. It is known as “Land of Looms and Lores”. It is the largest city of North Malabar. Kannur is singularly famous for the “Theyyam” performance-the magico-religious dance. It is believed that during its performance, its performer is possessed by the spirits of the gods and the performer thus is considered as God during that brief period (Theyyam is described below). It appears that the name ‘Kannur’ owes its name to the ancient village of Kannathur. A village with the name exists even today in one of the wards of Kannur Municipality. The village itself might have derived the name from one of the Aryan Gods-Krishna. Krishna is widely prayed to by people of Kerala especially women folk. Krishna is considered to be a manifestation of the important member of the Hindu trinity-Vishnu. According to the Hindu Mythology, in order to save the earth and humanity, Vishnu had to take ten different avatars. Each of these avatars was born on the terra firma as humans. With the possible exception of Rama avatar, every other manifestation seems to have retained extraordinary divine powers despite them being “humans”. It may be said that among all the avatars, Krishna seems to have been one of the popular and prayed to by most of the people of India. The “Guruvayoor” temple in Kerala is one of the most prominent among many. He was depicted as a carefree and naughty god with a soft corner for the womenfolk. His dalliances with gopis (milk-girls) from his village of Mathura have been celebrated in music and paintings as “divine-play”. Despite this playboy reputation, he is also respected as a powerful god who revealed the influential Hindu philosophical treatise “the Gita”. H e was also the chief protagonist of the Hindu epic- “The Mahabharata”. Thus, direct association with Krishna was a matter of great pride. Krishna is also worshipped in his child-form predominantly called “Kannan”. Kannur could be the combination of two words- “Kannan” and “Ur” (means place or land). These two words combined would mean the land or place of Kannan lending Kannur with some association with divinity. Close Association between Kannur with Gods has given rise to its characteristic lores. Kannur was an important port on the Arabian Sea and was merchants engaged in trade with Persia and Arabia in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Due to its strategic location, it was also made the British military headquarters on India’s west coast up to 1887. In conjunction with her sister city Thalassery (anglicized name Tellicherry), it was the third largest city on the western coast of British India in the eighteenth century after Mumbai and Karachi. Contemporary Kannur is the most urbanized district in Kerala, with more than 50% of its residents living in urban areas. Its urban population is the second largest in Kerala after Ernakulam district. During the British Rule, Kannur was part of the then Madras province in the District of North Malabar. Despite its close and intense associations with the Hindu religion, Kannur also has the distinction of being the capital city of only Muslim Sultanate of Kerala known as Arakkal dynasty. Kannur continues to be of strategic military importance for India. It houses one of the 62 military cantonments in the country, the Kannur Cantonment, and is the current seat of the Defense Security Corps. Geography: Kannur district lies between latitudes 11° 40′ to 12° 48′ North and longitudes 74° 52′ to 76° 07′ East. It is bound by the Western Ghats in the East (Coorg district of Karnataka State), Kozhikode (anglicized name Calicut) and Wayanad districts, in the South, Lakshadweep Sea in the West and Kasaragode, district in the North. The district can be divided into three geographical regions – highlands, midlands and lowlands. The highland region comprises mainly of mountains where coffee, rubber, tea, cardamom and other spices are grown in plantations. It is also famous for timber trees like teak and has localized areas dominated by bamboo. The midland region, lying between its mountains and the low lands, is made up of undulating hills and valleys. Six rivers drain Kannur, the longest being the Valapattanam river with a length of 110 km. Other rivers flowing through Kannur district are Kuppam, Mahe River, Anjarakandi, Thalassery, Ramapuram and Perumba. This is an area of intense agricultural activity where rice and paddy are grown. Major part of the district comes under midland region with numerous hills and dales and it presents an undulating surface gradually ascending and merging into the slopes of Western Ghats. The lowland is relatively narrow and comprises of rivers, deltas and seashore. This is a region of coconut and paddy cultivation. Kannur district is very rich in vegetation. Natural vegetation is contained in thick forests. Plant communities, ranging from psammophytes and mangroves to evergreen forests are seen in this district. Brief History: The earliest evidence of human habitation in the district is rock-cut caves and megalithic burial sites of the Neolithic age. There is no evidence of the Paleolithic man having lived in this region. Nevertheless, rock-cut caves and Megalithic burial sites of the Neolithic age have come to light in certain parts of the district The Thaliparamba-Kannur-Thalassery area abounds in rock-cut caves, dolmens, burial stone circles and menhirs, all of megalithic burial order. It can be assumed that the first batch of Aryan immigrants into the State entered the district through the Tuluva (part of the contemporary Karnataka state) region. The area today known as Kannur was previously part of the Chera (a strong southern dynasty) kingdom, which ruled most of Kerala during the first several centuries CE. The Chera king was Kulashekhara Varman. Cheras ruled Kerala between 9th and 12th century with their capital at Mahodayapuram and Kannur was part of this empire. During this time, a line of rulers known as the Mooshaka Kings held sway over Chirakkal and Kasaragode areas (Kolattunadu) with their capital near Mount Eli (or ezhi). It is difficult to say if the Mooshaka kings were feudatories of the Cheras or an independent dynasty. By the 14th century A. D. , the old Mooshaka kingdom had come to be known as Kolattunadu and the rulers known as Kolathiris and had come into prominence in north Kerala. The Kolathiris had acquired political and military power and had become a force to reckon with by the time of the arrival of the Portuguese towards the end of the 15th century. They were political and commercial rivals of the Zamorins of Kozhikode. Later Kannur was made the capital of the Kolathiri Rajas, whose kingdom had trading relations with Arabia and Persia in the 12th century and 13th centuries. In his book on travels, Marco Polo recounts his visit to the area in mid 1290’s. Other visitors included Fa-hien, the Buddhist pilgrim and Ibn Batuta, Moroccan writer and historian. According to local legends, the ships of Solomon had anchored along the coasts of Kannur to collect timber for building the Temple of the Lord. Kannur also finds mention as Naura in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a Greek work of great antiquity. There was intense rivalry between the then contemporary rulers of Kerala to dominate the lucrative spice trade. To control the trade meant control of the coastlines where the ports were located. These rivalries triggered off constant wars. Despite the obvious dangers of letting-in colonial powers in their territory, the rulers didn’t stop their petty skirmishes. It was these gaps that every colonial power exploited. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama when he passed by Kannur in 1498 also used the opportunities and got into an alliance with the Kolathiri kings. Though Vasco Da Gama, the famous Portuguese navigator, did not visit Kannur on his way to Kozhikode in May 1498, he established contacts with the Kolathiri ruler. His ships which had left Kozhikode on August 29, 1498 were contacted by the boats sent by the Kolathiri and Gama was invited to visit the palace. The aim of the Kolathiri was to gain wealth and power with the help of the Portuguese, the same way his rival the Zamorin had acquired with the help of the Arabs. In winning the alliance of the Kolathiri, Vasco Da Gama, in turn, had successfully exploited the jealousies of the native princes and won for the Portuguese a virtual monopoly of the pepper trade. He was able to get his permission to build a Portuguese settlement in the premises of Kannur. Francisco De Almeida was sent from Portugal with specific instructions to erect forts at strategic points. He started constructing the Kannur Fort in 1505 and it was named St. Angelo. The settlement was just the beginning and it is here that the iconic St. Angelo’s fort was built. On March 16, 1506, the Portuguese effectively intercepted an armada of Turks and Arabs, whom the Zamorin had launched against Kannur. The Portuguese navy under Lorenzo Almeida engaged the Zamorin’s fleet in battle and the Portuguese ships won a decisive victory. This naval victory resulted in the establishment of Portuguese naval supremacy in the Indian seas. As the power of the Portuguese grew, the Kolathiri and the Zamorin started feeling the jitters. Despite intense rivalry, the Zamorin was able to convince the Kolathiri of the real motives of the Portuguese in India and the perils inherent in his policy of befriending them. To accentuate their alienation with the local princes and chieftains, the devoutly catholic Portuguese followed a policy of religious persecution and forcible conversion. Finally Portuguese were seen as a common enemy and an alliance was sealed between the Kolathiri and the Zamorin. In 1558, the Kolathiri came openly into the field against the Portuguese by providing active support to the Kunjhali Marrikkar (the rebel naval captain) of Kozhikode. The Kolathiri and the Zamorin fought a common war against the Portuguese and they besieged the fort of St. Angelo at Kannur, in 1564. But the Portuguese continued to maintain a precarious foothold at Kannur till 1663 when the fort was captured by another European colonial power-the Dutch in February that year. The English East India Company had humble beginnings in Kerala. It got its first foothold in the district when in the closing years of the 17th century; it acquired a site at Thalassery for the erection of a fort and a factory. In spite of the many difficulties it had to face in the initial stages, the trade of the English East India Company prospered during the latter part of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century, due to their liberal trade policies. Further, unlike the Portuguese, they refused to interfere in the religious and caste affairs of the local population. In the latter half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century Kolathiri’s dominion started disintegrating due to dissensions in the royal family. It gave the British the opportunity to acquire political power in around the territories. With the ascension of Haider Ali on the Mysore throne, a new “native” army was on the prowl for expanded territories. Haider Ali conquered Malabar in 1773. In January 1788, Tipu Sultan descended on Kerala with a large army and founded a new capital at Feroke for his Malabar province. In the latter half of the 18th century, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, rulers of Mysore, conquered much of Kannur which was then British territory. The British branded Haider Ali and Tipu sultan as arch enemies competing for their territory and thus their trade. With strong and competing motives, conflicts between these parties were but a natural progression of ambitions. In 1792, at the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Mysore War, the British had decisively defeated the Mysorean forces in Kerala. The treaties of Srirangapatanam, signed on 22nd February and 18th March, 1792, formally ceded their possessions to the British. They took over Kannur and the surrounding region, and made into the new Malabar District. This district was made a part of the British India’s Madras Presidency. The British Government divided the province of Malabar into two administrative divisions – the Northern and Southern, presided over by a Superintendent each at Thalassery and Cherpulasseri, under the general control of the Supervisor and Chief Magistrate of the province of Malabar who had his headquarters at Kozhikode. The defeat of Tipu sultan was symbolic of the death of native resistance. Though Tipu was a great warrior, his own thirst for dominance had resulted in constant invasions of neighboring areas. Despite shades of magnanimity in his personality he didn’t hesitate in forcibly converted many natives to Islam. But he effectively cultivated an image of a “secular–radical” warrior. His defeat symbolized ominous times to come and come it did. The British were the new rulers and the rulers within the region understood this very well. The victors get to keep all the spoils- in order to consolidate their possessions, the British were able to “enter” into agreements with the Rajas of Chirakkal, Kottayam and Kadathanand and all of them acknowledged the full sovereignty of the Company over their respective territories. The “company” was now crowned the King of Kerala (at least most of the parts). The symbolic importance of the St. Angelo’s Fort: It was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. It is situated along the Arabian Sea about 3 km from Kannur town. It was not trade alone that was in the minds of the Portuguese when they wanted to built a settlement in Kannur. They were planning for a longer stay and knew that dominating the native population wouldn’t be an easy task. As every colonialist knows, it is important to overwhelm a population and dominate their minds if they were to be subjugated. Thus, in order to fortify their position in both on land and the minds of these natives, the Portuguese used architecture. Architecture has proved its power in overawing the masses; be it a palace, fort, churches or other secular structures. Size does dominate and it has been proven over and over again. Thus, the Portuguese led by Don Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese viceroy for India, built the St. Angelo’s Fort north of Kannur in 1505 on a promontory jutting into the Lakshadweep Sea. Though not massive in size compared to other forts in India, Its strong walls do give the impression of strength. Guns were placed at strategic points that were visible to people. The fort has become apart of local lores and became symbolic of colonial power and dominance over the natives. The fort as the first colonial structure acquired a certain element of legitimacy and became the symbol of authority. It was almost like “he who owns the fort owns the land”. Thus its ownership became the ultimate objective for all colonialists. Its ownership changed hands several times. In 1663 the fort was captured by the Dutch, signifying the transfer of power to them. However, the fort was strongly identified with the Portuguese power and in symbolic dismissal of the importance of the Portuguese power; the fort was sold to the Arakkal King in 1772. As habitual colonizers, the British understood the symbolic power of the structure and conquered it in 1790 and transformed it into one of their major military stations on the Malabar Coast. Even today, it is a fairly well preserved monument stands with pride and its big guns still menacingly watch out for intruders. A painting of this fort and the fishing ferry as a back ground has been displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. When the head of Kunjhali Marakkar (the iconic rebel naval captain) was defeated, his dismembered body and exhibited here sending as strong message to the inhabitants and their rulers. Thalassery Fort-symbolizing the humble beginnings of the British: This fort symbolizes the humble beginnings of the English unlike the grand entry of the Portuguese. They arrived in Thalassery in 1683 and erected a shed (temporary building) here to enable storing the goods they had acquired to trade. They shifted their commercial capital to Thalassery from Kozhikode in desperation as the then dominant power; the Dutch had obstructed their trade. By 1700, the British built the Thalassery Fort on a small hill called Tiruvellapadukunnu and by 1708, they had acquired the confidence to strengthen it by increasing its height and building bastions. The fort is a square structure built of laterite and is distinguished by its massive ventilated walls and strong flanking bastions. It was also used to imprison rebels. Behind the fort there is a cemetery where the members of the colonial community were buried. Though the cemetery is in a dilapidated state, even today one can read the writings on the tombstones. The famous St. John’s Anglican Church is located behind this fort. Theyyam-a brief Sketch: Theyyam is a unique art form of art prevalent in the Malabar region of Kerala. Northern Malabar region traditionally called the Kolattunadu comprises the Kannur and the Kasaragode district and is the epicenter of Theyyam. Theyyam is traditionally known as Kaliyattom. Kaliyattom is performed annually as a part of a religious practice. A combination of animism, totemism, and primitive tribal beliefs, its sustenance has also been powered by the consistency of belief in its representation as “the dance of the Gods”. The performers’ use of bright colors on their faces and their costumes, powerful & aggressive performances in the backdrop of loud and rhythmic music makes it a visual delight. This dance form is masculine in its depiction called “thandava” though most of deities propitiated are mother goddesses. Theyyam has a radically distinct form of worship from Hinduism. The shrines around which the performance happened are marked by the absence of idols. The object of worship was the sword, shields and other accessories that were used by the theyyam performers during their performances. This helps us understand the religio-martial significance of Theyaam performances. Theyyam truly belongs to the genre of folklore considering that it has sustained itself on the involvement and support of the inhabitants of the Malabar region. This ancient art form represents the collective aspirations of the people who believe that during the performance the body of the human that performs Theyyam becomes the vehicle for the appeased god to descent in their midst. Theyyam is not just an art form, it is a religion. It is the art form of the people, by the people and for the people. Theyyam performance seeks to bring the gods to the earth temporarily. The body of the performer or “deham” becomes a medium for the earthly descent of gods. After the necessary rituals, the dancer goes into a trance and it is believed that the spirit of gods have entered into his body. For the next few minutes, the dancer becomes the divine and is treated as one. This dance form is the outcome of severe caste system in Kerala. With the people from the lower castes not allowed into the religious mainstream including visiting temples or reading holy scriptures, this was their religion and their way of worship. Describing theyyam is out of the scope of this work however it may be stated that theyyam also represented the only way of dissent in those constraining times. Prominent places in Kannur: Muzhappilangad Beach: it is located 15. Kms from Kannur and 8 Kms from Thalassery. Black rocks protect this long clean beach from the currents of the deep, making it shallows waters a swimmer’s paradise. This is the only drive-in beach in Kerala and one can drive entire length of 4 Kms. Ezhimala: was the capital of the ancient Mooshaka kings and is an ancient historical site. It is conspicuous by its isolation among a cluster of hills forming a promontory. It is located 38 Kms north of Kannur. A flourishing sea port and centre of trade in ancient Kerala, it was also one of the major battle fields of the Chola-Chera war of the 11th century. Local lores attribute a visit by Lord Buddha to Ezhimala. The hill is noted for rare medicinal herbs. Bordered by sea on three sides, the importance of Ezhimala has increased since the building of the Indian Naval Academy. Pythal Mala: is located 65 Kms from Kannur Town. This enchanting hill station is situated at a height of 4,500 ft. above sea level. It is near the Kerala-Karnataka border and is rich in flora and fauna. To reach the top of the hill, one has to undertake a 6 km trek. Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu: The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is situated 18 Kms from Kannur town. It Is one of the most well-known snake parks in the country. The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, some of which are facing extinction. It houses a large collection of venomous and non-venomous snakes. It also has a facility to prepare anti-venom. Mappila Bay: is a natural fishing harbour, lying near and visible from the St. Angelo’s fort. A sea wall projecting from the fort separates the rough sea and inland water. The bay was famous during the Kolathiris’ regime as the commercial harbour that linked Kolattunadu with Lakshadweep and foreign countries for trading. Contemporary Mappila bay has been turned into a modernized fishing harbour, developed under an Indo-Norwegian Pact. © Sanjai velayudhan end note: please give your feedback on Sanjai. velayudhan@gmail. com.

Bad Things Happen To Good People

Bad things do happen to good people. Each of us experiences situations where we feel robbed, slandered, miss-understood, cheated, or simply jerked around in life. The end result may be the loss of a job, a friend, a love interest, a business deal, or the creation of a rift between family members. The pain we feel is very real, very deep, and very private. Often it’s impossible for people around us to understand the scope, or the depth of the pain we carry as a result of the emotional wounding we’ve experienced. What then, do we do when life really hurts? There are varying degrees of pain we often feel in response to situations inflicted upon us by other people. Some levels of pain are small, and we have the ability to let the situation roll off our back, letting us carry on in life as if nothing happened. For some, there are situations where the wound is so deep, we find ourselves crippled by it, not knowing how to get out from under the pain and the hurt that results. It’s in the midst of surrounding, choking pain that many people bog down in knowing what to do, or how to cope. Through the course of my own painful experiences, I have learned and identified key factors that help us deal with life’s pain. Other people’s list may include additional points or comments, but I believe there are a small few handful of steps we must all take in dealing with life’s hurts. First. Privately admit to yourselves, you’ve been hurt! Own it. Embrace it. Everytime we lose something of value in life, we will enter a grieving process. Recognize this and be honest about it. It’s important to start at a place of honesty, recognizing your pain for what it is, a grieving process. This process may seem so insignificant, but for many there is tremendous difficulty in admitting, ” I am feeling really hurt by this situation, and as a result, I’ve lost something very precious to me. “Secondly, (and this step in the process, is no where near as easy as it sounds for it often goes against our human nature) we need to forgive our offender. Understand, that by forgiving our offender, we are not letting him or her off the hook as far as consequences are concerned. By forgiving, we’re letting our self off the hook. We’re giving up any motivation or thought of revenge. When a person refuses to forgive, they choose to carry the pain, the anger, the bitterness, of the situation around with them every minute of the day and night. To a person who doesn’t forgive, the situation becomes an emotional wound that festers with compounding or secondary emotional infection. Until we forgive our offender, our offender ends up owning our emotions. (Many people have a poor understanding of what forgiveness is. For those who find themselves in this position, a simple internet search under the heading “Understanding Forgiveness” will produce many good articles and aides on this subject. )The third step in the process of responding to life’s deep hurt’s is to find a “safe friend” and share your pain with them. We all have friends in our lives, but what is meant by the term “safe friend”? “Safe friends” are friends who listen to you, are empathetic with you, can advise you honestly, but the most important quality in a “safe friend”, is the person’s ability to respect and maintain confidentiality. Not all friends are “safe friends”. “Safe friends” are often few and far between. “Safe friends” can be a current friend, a counselor, a priest, a therapist, a law enforcement officer, a lawyer, someone who’s been through a similar situation, or a person recommended to you by a friend because your friend feels they simply can’t help you, but know of a person who can. Fourth, at some point in our healing process, we need to decide to carry on in life. If we don’t carry on in life, then we’re choosing to let our offender win, and we’re choosing to be our offender’s victim. While this can be difficult to hear when we’re in the depths of a painful experience, being a “victim” is a choice, it’s a mental state, and it can be terribly crippling. For those caught in a victim mentality, it’s important to understand, they are in the position of strength, for they can choose to no longer be a victim by removing themselves from the conflict. If you feel you are being hurt by a person, and you find a healthy way to remove yourself from that situation, then that person has no more emotional power over you. Often when people struggle with life’s hurts and pains, little thoughts of revenge enter into their minds. In the heat of the moment, many arguments can be made to seemingly justify getting back at a person, but is it the right decision. Acts of revenge are never considered a consequence. Revenge is one type of offence being exchanged for another. People who harbor desires for revenge are people who struggle with the aspect of forgiveness. Recently, while in a conversation with a close friend, our conversation took on a more serious note. She began to share with me her critical situation of a serious internal family conflict between her and her brother. The situation had become so difficult my friend was considering buying a gun to use against her abusive drug addicted sibling, if necessary. Her hurt was real, as was the pain caused her, but the use of a gun is not a solution, for the act of pulling the trigger and ending the life of her brother would haunt her in years to come at every family reunion, family wedding, family birthday, or family holiday. Her drug addicted brother would end up owning her emotions from his grave. There are many people in serious situation like my close friend, and it’s for this reason I share her story. In this particular case, and as I advised her, my friend’s solution lay in forgiveness, then seeking out a local “safe friend” in the law enforcement or legal community who could help her establish safe legal boundaries with this sibling, until he gained control of himself, and his social behaviors. For my friend, her boundaries might take on the form of having her extended family join her in introducing to the brother a drug rehabilitation intervention; perhaps it’ll take a restraining order, or perhaps lifting him totally out of his environment cutting him off from his drug source by giving him jail time. This may sound extreme for a family member to do, but remember this line, if you remember no other. . . “Better alive in a cell, than dead on the street!” The establishing of proper healthy boundaries is always a healthy life direction, and a good way for people to remove themselves from the role of a victim. When life really hurts, there are positive solutions that empower us to live life to the fullest in spite of our wounding. We may have to change friends, and distance ourselves from wreck less and immature associations, but we can bounce back, we can smile again, we can laugh, and we can rise above our circumstance. The choice is always ours.

Spy game is one of several good activities for children, and fortunately a lot of children love to play it. This is a healthy game for kids since it helps both the body and mind of your children to be more active. Besides, it also helps your children to improve their creativity and imagination. Therefore, if your children love playing this game, you can give them complete sets of spy gear to your children. Generally, spy gear is divided into several different categories including security, surveillance, defense, as well as communication. With those tools in the hands of your kids, they could be great young Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes. Now let us talk about those categories one by one. The first category will be security tools. There are several devices that support the security of the gathered information of any mission well. The most basic security tools that gives high protection for the data is the digital safe. Some supporting security systems are also available to increase the security of the data, such as laser trip wires and motion sensor alarm. Laser trip wires usually set the alarm off whenever somebody walks through these invisible lasers. Surveillance is the second category of spy gear. Usually, any amateur spy needs a night-vision apparatus. You can find some product that comes in night-vision goggles as well as small scopes. In order to help your children seeing objects in the dark, these products are using blue or red LED lights. Besides, you can also find some varieties of audio surveillance systems in several different forms, including spy pen and remote controlled audio spy cars. Spy pen allows your children hear conversation at medium range. Meanwhile, audio spy cars allow your kids to hear conversation from up to 75 feet away. The third category of spy gear will be defense tools. Many selections of weapon to defense the enemy are available in a lot of types.
