Tyrannosaurus Rex Dinosaur Facts

Posted: Apr 20, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

Tyrannosaurus rex was a species of carnivorous (meat eating) dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period, between about 67 million years and 65 million years ago. It was one of the last dinosaurs, and was one of dinosaurs that died out during the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, known as the K-T Extinction Event (the mass extinction which wiped out all the remaining dinosaurs as well as many other species too). Tyrannosaurus rex was, of course, truly massive (although not the largest of dinosaurs, and not even the largest of the carnivorous dinosaurs). A typical adult Tyrannosaurus rex is believed to have been about 11. 9 meters (39 feet) long, about 6. 1 meters (20 feet) tall, and probably weighed around 7 tons. Some animals were however even larger – for example, an animal nicknamed “Sue” which is in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois, is about 12. 8 meters (42 feet) long.  Traditionally, Tyrannosaurus rex has been depicted as a fierce and active predator, however in recent years some scientists have challenged this view. Those scientists who support the traditional view of Tyrannosaurus rex point to the relatively large areas of the animal’s brain devoted to sight and vision (which would have been useful for hunting), and the arrangement of the animal’s eyes (which are forward-facing and suggestive of binocular vision, also useful for hunting). On the other hand, those scientists who have challenged the traditional view, argue that Tyrannosaurus was probably relatively slow moving, and that it probably mostly lived as a scavenger feeding on carcasses killed by other animals.

There are many options, but one idea that some teachers are now using is playing a variant of the game of bingo. The way that fractions bingo is played is exactly like the standard game of bingo but with one key change, namely that the bingo cards contain numbers which are the solutions to fractions problems rather than the usual bingo numbers.

Division Bingo Card Maker

Teachers are always searching for educational activities that can be used as a means of practising divisions. An option that an increasing number of teachers are today using in their classes is introducing a variation of bingo. The way that division bingo is conducted is just like standard bingo but with one important change: the bingo cards are printed with numbers which are the answers to division questions rather than the typical numbers used in bingo.

Jim Corbett National Park – the Tiger Camp

]]>

The only place on earth that almost guarantees you tiger-spotting. The first in India to be declared a National Park, this reserve is named after Jim Corbett the legendary hunter who turned into a conversationalist. The park has changed quite a few names, since its inception. Originally named Hailey National Park, it was renamed as Ramanganga later. Finally it got its name as Jim Corbett National Park and since then has been the most famous National Park in the country.
Kumaon as a region was greatly troubled by man-eating tigers. It was then that a famous hunter came to the rescue and hunted down many of those dreaded creatures. Since then he was revered highly by the villagers. However, Corbett was not only into hunting those glorious creatures down. He worked hard for their conservation too. He brought fame to the region by his book, the Man eaters of Kumaon. It is said that he shot wildlife more with his camera than with his gun. It was Corbett who started a campaign to save the tigers which later led to the marking out of this reserve. This National Park in turn inspired other reserves to take up the tiger cause.
The Jim Corbett National Park is a haven for all those who are even remotely interested in wildlife and wildcat. With the best tiger population, the park is the best place to spot the elusive animals. Even if tourists are lucky enough to spot the tigers, the park has a lot more to offer. Rich grasslands, varied avian populace and diverse creatures make the park an interesting bio hot spot. The park has a picturesque location at the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of river Ramanganga.
The park has equipped itself well to make it visitor-friendly. There are machaans dotted all over the area which allows tourists to climb on them to gain height and get a good view of wildlife. Carrying a binocular is always recommended to catch a good glimpse of the avian population here. A good number of places sell such stuff outside the park limits. The best and safest way to tour the park is to take a guided tour. Guides are experts who know it better as to where you have more chances of spotting tiger and other wildlife. They also have a better knowledge of tracks and can keep you from getting lost in the wilds. Some part of the Jim Corbett National Park can be toured on foot too. It is however risky and a guide is again recommended. Elephant and Jeep safaris are available to the tourists who come here. Visitors are again advised to check out before hand for the availability of vehicles for safaris as the park authorities allow only a fixed number of vehicles per day in order to keep a check on the noise and pollution levels in the park. Elephant safaris are good to get closer look of the wild creatures. Since vehicles make noise and scare the animals away, elephants are a better option to get a closer look.
Tourists to the Jim Corbett National Park wouldn’t find it difficult to get accommodation here as there are quite a few good hotels and resorts around. Though there aren’t many food outlets inside the Park, the hotels and resorts inside provide good options. Do check out the accessibility of the park before planning a trip here. The park is closed for some months from June to November.

Going To A Safari In South Africa

By: Joey Singer
Posted: Jul 23, 2010

South Africa continues to enjoy the tremendous goodwill of holidaymakers worldwide. While travel to most long haul destinations declined last year, this country experienced an enviable 6. 5% growth, according to the World Tourism Organisation. The growth was jump started by the transformation heralded by the demise of apartheid and onset of democratic rule in 1994. Apartheid polices of racial discrimination protected by law greatly offended enlightened opinion in many parts of the world. And the enemies of these policies launched a very effective campaign against visiting South Africa. So it came to be that South Africa, a truly superior destination by any standards, remained hidden to many until the dark cloud of apartheid blew over. The wildlife safari is a key item on the South Africa tourist menu. Those who chose to see Africa’s wildlife here will not be disappointed. The game viewing experience is excellent at the top rated Kruger National Park and at other well-regarded game parks in the country. Wildlife is protected in over 300 public and private game and nature reserves. SANParks (South African National Parks) manages 20 national parks spread throughout the country. Kruger is the place to see big game particularly the “big five” of buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros. Most of the other parks have specialised in conserving particular species or are identified with specific animals. The Greater Addo National Park, for example, is the only place you find elephants in the Cape region. Some of the parks along the 3000 km coastline host whales and dolphins. South Africa’s wildlife conservation policies are advanced and highly successful. An initiative targeting wildlife sanctuaries cutting across international boundaries hopes to replicate this success elsewhere. This is in recognition of the fact that wildlife is no respecter of territorial lines covenanted between men. Transfrontier conservation areas have been identified in six regions along the boundaries with Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. In South Africa, the best places to see wildlife is at private game reserves and national parks. Private game reserves are not as expansive as the publicly owned national parks. Their key selling point is the superior accommodation and ranger escorted personalized tours. The national parks on the other hand are popular with self-drive tourists. They offer accommodation in a limited number of enclosed rest-camps, in thatched rondavels, bungalows and chalets. Tour companies also offer packages, including transport and guide in the national parks. See our South Africa Tours page to view info and book one of our package safari offers. South Africa is home to numerous species of land animals, including the celebrated “big five” – rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard and elephant. Most members of the big five league are undoubtedly charismatic. But this is not the reason they are so named – otherwise I would petition that the buffalo be ejected. The reason is that these are the animals the early safari hunters found most challenging. The idea of viewing game without killing had not gained widespread acceptance then. The arrogant practice of killing animals as a sport is very unpopular today with those who value the right to life and dignity of animals as full members of our planet.

In addition to the disagreeable aesthetics, hunting brings about a bad relationship between man and the animals. I will illustrate this with an incident narrated to me by a guide on a recent visit to a country (not South Africa) that allows hunting. The guide recalled an occasion when he was taken by surprise to see an elephant charging at his vehicle. This was contrary to his experience with elephants in that region. This unusual behaviour arose because hunters had wounded the elephant. The elephant hereafter dealt with vehicles and humans as enemies. It is regrettable that South Africa’s otherwise stellar conservation policies, allow the practice of hunting in certain areas. Game viewing is usually done from the comfort of a vehicle but walking, horseback, camel and canoeing safaris are increasingly becoming popular. If you wish to view game in any of these modes, it is required that you be accompanied by an armed ranger. Full blood adventure types think that watching game aboard a vehicle is for wimps. Walking safaris are designed for such hardy souls. And it is the reason that the thoughtful folks at SANParks maintain a network of wilderness trails in the parks. The typical walking safari will have a maximum of eight persons with ages ranging from 12 to 60 years and last for 2 nights and 3 days. Participants must obviously be physically fit. Without doubt, the best place to see wildlife, especially the “big five” is Kruger National Park. This is the flagship of South Africa’s national parks. The Kruger was created in 1898 and owes its existence to the vision of Paul Kruger at one time president of the Transvaal Republic that later became part of the Union of South Africa. He was ahead of his time in recognizing the need to create a sanctuary to preserve and protect wildlife. Even at that time it was clear that the hunter with his rifle would soon annihilate all the animals. Kruger offers a diversity of animals unrivalled anywhere else in South Africa. In addition to the big five, some of the interesting game you find here include – hippo, jackal, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog, numerous antelope species, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena. The park is home to more than 140 mammal and 500 bird species. Kruger spreads over nearly 20, 000 sq km of unspoilt scrubland punctuated by acacia and mopane trees. The botanic biodiversity is vast and over 336 tree species are found here. Accommodation within Kruger is provided at self-catering rest camps that offer good but basic lodging. There are also some smaller bush lodges and bushveld camps offering more luxurious stay. Accommodation ranges from rondavel huts and safari tents to family bungalows and cottages and luxury guesthouses. In addition, there are caravan and tent camping sites at some of the rest camps. Most of the camps are supplied with electric power and telephone. Other facilities include shops, kitchen facilities, restaurants and petrol stations. Kruger has 3,000 kilometers of a well-maintained road network and is ideal for those seeking a self-drive experience. The park is relatively inexpensive and easily accessible. It is therefore hugely popular and draws over 600,000 visitors annually. It in particular gets very crowded over the school holidays in July and December. Since there are a maximum number of vehicles allowed into the park daily, you are well advised to make advance arrangements if you plan to visit then. Game viewing is good year round, but the best time will be from April to September when the bush is sparse. Kruger is located 330 km to the northeast of Johannesburg. If you have no stomach for a long drive, take one of the daily flights from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa Airport, Hoedspruit Airport or Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport. If you wish to rent a car at either Durban or Johannesburg, visit our South Africa Car Rental page for your reservation. Towards the western and southern sides of Kruger National Park, there are a number of highly rated private game reserves. This includes Sabi Sand, Mala Mala, Londolozi and Timbavati game reserves. Here you will find some of the finest game lodges in Africa. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is another unique game sanctuary. This huge park is a combination of the two parks -the former Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa. Covering over 36,000 sq km, it is one of the biggest wildlife conservation areas anywhere in the world. The landscape is marked by red sand dunes and sparse thornbush vegetation. The environment of this park provides outstanding opportunities for unforgettable wildlife photos. This park is host to the famous black-maned Kalahari lions. You will also see gemsbok, springbok, eland, blue wildebeest, cheetahs, wild dogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes and leopards. Birding is also excellent and of 297 species recorded, 96 are resident. The Kgalagadi is not for the fainthearted -it is far from anywhere and getting there is a slog. It is located 904 km to the west of Johannesburg. All accommodation in the park is managed by SANParks. You will get the best experience if you visit between June and July when the weather is coolest. On safari, remember to carry a pair of binoculars to help you spot animals. Also carry a camera and other equipment as a means of recording your safari. It is the only way to shut up those who doubt the story of your encounter with the African wildlife. Carry along a decent pair sunglasses to shield you from glare, especially if you travel to the semi desert Kgalagadi. Dressing well means cool clothing (such as light cottons and linen) for summer and warm for winter. Joey Singer – About the Author:

The Mayans had a complex system of trade and economy throughout their entire history. Birds in Flight

By: Eddie Prentice

Don’t we all wish we could fly? Soar through the sky without care in the world. Free as a bird. 1. DovesIt’s funny that doves and pigeons come from the same species of bird when one is thought of as dirty and unattractive and the other a beautiful symbol and romance and peace. Doves are stout-bodied birds with short necks. They typically lay 1-2 eggs and both parents, in a very egalitarian fashion, care for their young. 2. FlamingosFlamingos are friendly wading birds that often stand on one leg while they keep the other tucked beneath their body. The reason for this is not fully understood. Some researchers believe it is a way of conserving energy, others believe that the lifted leg is asleep. You may not have known that flamingos are born with grey feathers and that their pink colouring is the result of drinking bacteria infested water. The better their diet the brighter their colours, and the more desirable they are as a mate.

3. GeeseGeese belong to the family Anetidae that also includes swans and ducks. There are two main categories of geese, black and grey. Ducks are typically surface feeders, while swans have the longest necks. Have you ever seen two swans face each other with their necks in the shape of a heart? It’s quite something. 4. HeronsHerons are non-swimming water birds that feed on the margins of lakes, rivers, swamps, ponds, and the sea. They are typically found in wetlands, although there are some species that live in alpine or tropical regions. 5. OwlsOwls are solitary, nocturnal birds. Their forward facing eyes offer binocular vision and a greater sense of depth perception, which is helpful for late night hunting. They tend to hunt small mammals, insects and other birds. Some hunt fish as well. 6. PenguinsPenguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, especially Antarctica. For some reason, penguins have played a large role in popular culture. They have been the subject of many books and films including, Happy Feet, Surf’s Up, March of the Penguins, Mr. Popper’s Penguin, and And Tango Makes Three. I guess everyone just loves the little guys!Birds are an exotic class of animal that we so rarely are able to get close to. Perhaps that’s what makes them so interesting. Or perhaps it’s because most of them have the ability to fly and we are stuck with two feet on earth, unless of course we decide to put our two feet in a basket and go for a balloon ride.

Hike the Santa Rosa Mountains on Your Next Palm Springs Vacation

By: Mitchell Sussman
Posted: Feb 15, 2011

]]>

On my last family vacation to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities, my family and I spent the day hiking the Santa Rosa Mountains.
The Santa Rosa Mountains consist of a  72,259-acre wilderness area located in Southern California in the counties of Riverside and San Diego above the Coachella Valley between La Quinta to the north and Anza Borrego Desert state park to the south.
On the day that we went hiking, we entered the Congressionally established wilderness from our vacation destination in La Quinta. We brought with us plenty of water, a lunch binoculars, compass and camera.
The Santa Rosa Mountains have areas of cultural significance containing primitive trails, roasting pits, milling stations, rock shelters and examples of rock art. Native Americans have identified areas that are currently used for temporary habitation, resource collection and ritual hunting. Remains of historical early settlement and mining include quarry sites, mining prospects and water improvements associated with natural springs.

The Congressional designation as a wilderness area was made in 1984 to protect the indigenous animals, flora and fauna. Among other things, the Santa Rosa Mountains have the largest herd of peninsular bighorn sheep in the country. The Bighorn Institute, a non-profit research group established in 1982 by several biologists and veterinarians, estimates that approximately ten percent of the entire world population of the Big Horn sheep live in the Santa Rosa Mountains.
The Peninsular Range bighorn sheep herd utilize the entire range between 1,000 to 4,000 elevation and are most plentiful in the Bear Creek, Deep Canyon and Martinez Canyon areas.
On the day of our hike we saw three of the endangered Bighorns, plus some mule deer and coyotes. We also took in some of the native rare plants in the Santa Rosa Wilderness such as Santa Rosa sage, and Nuttall’s scrub oak. Perennial herbs include Santa Rosa Mountain leptosiphon, and triple ribbed milkvetch.
Recreational activities in the Santa Rosa Wilderness include backpacking, horseback riding, day hiking, and nature study photography. Hunting is restricted to the southern half of the wilderness since the northern portion is located within a State Wildlife Refuge. Deer, quail and dove are hunted in season.
Some of the more notable trails are the Cactus Spring trail which is an ancient aboriginal pathway that links the Santa Rosa plateau with the desert floor in the Coachella Valley and the Boo Hoff equestrian trail. The latter is one of the few trails in the wilderness that is constructed and maintained by a local equestrian club.
Our hike was up Rabbits Peak, located near the southeastern boundary. It is probably the most notable of the desert peaks for its challenging climb to the 6,623-foot summit. I am told the local Sierra Club chapters lead organized day and overnight trips to the peak.
While we didn’t make it to the top of Rabbit’s Peak, the day was full of adventure and a great way to spend your next visit to Palm Springs and the California desert resort cities.
