Crysis 2 was heavily scrutinized months leading up to its release. PC gamers were expecting Crytek to deliver another genre defining game to test their hardware on. Console gamers had no idea what to expect since they never played the first Crysis. Crytek is evil and stripped out options and ditched the openness that made the first Crysis great. The graphics aren’t nearly as good with no DX 11 support out of the box. You can say many things about Crytek’s decision to go multiplatform. Hell, you might even hate Crytek and never play Crysis 2. i can tell you one thing however, Crysis 2 its a great game.
Presentation – Crysis 2 is a epic sci-fi first person shooter developed by Crytek and published by EA Games for the PC, PLaystation 3 and Xbox 360. Remember all the hype about consoles never being able to run Crysis? Yes your console can run a Cryengine 3 Crysis game albeit with a few frame rate dips and draw distance issues. Sometimes Crysios 2 has really bad ai with pmc’s and aliens. Seems like the ai as a whole was rushed. However, Crytek did a wonderful job at bringing a realistic looking destroyed New York City to life with big vertical levels rarely found in console FPS games.
Story – No spoilers will be present so don’t worry. I will try and give you an outline to Crysis 2’s story still. The overall story was really good but started out slow. Yes you read correct. The game starts off with a marine named Alcatraz (the protagonist) washing up on NYC’s shore after a Ceth attack on his Sub. Ceth are the main alien force behind the entire Crysis mythology. Prophet (from the first game) manages to save Alcatraz’s life and gives you his nanosuit. He tells Alcatraz “your our last hope” or something like that. After that, Prophet kills himself. At this point i was thinking the story was cheesy or its just setting itself up. It ended up being the latter. It all becomes clear why Prophet gave Alcatraz the nanosuit and killed himself at the end of Crysis 2.
The story in Crysis 2 forms over hours at a decent pace. You will learn about many things regarding the Ceth’s viral outbreak, how it happened and why the Ceth are attacking himans. You will learn about the infection and why it happened and how to stop it. The story will actually show you who knew about the Ceth outbreak before it happened. You will learn about shady corporations that you have to fight. The story culminates in a great ending that i personally didn’t expect. Crysis 3 was set up really well.
Visuals – Ahh the graphics! If it wasn’t for some bugs, glitches, bad framerate dips and inconsistent textures this would be the best looking game on consoles hands down. With that said, Crytek created a beautiful game with a realistic art style that looked amazing. The lighting is all realtime. When your walking through alleys and look up at the sun, it blinds you. Crytek did use the lighting trick quite a bit and its impact wore off by the end of the game.
Crysis 2 does feature big levels for a console first person shooter game. The levels are smaller, but more vertical in level design compared to the first Crysis. Before every big firefight your usually overlooking the situation on a roof top or skyscraper etc. The draw distance while not as good as the first game, is decent on consoles. The only real problems i have with is the use of alote of blur and some inconsistent textures. Whenever your inside a structure in Crysis 2, the graphical prowess declines significatly. The textures in the side market stores are the worse. The sewage canals looked really good however.
The gun models that take up most of the screen aren’t the best looking gun models but do look really nice. What the Cryengine 3 really excels at in Crysis 2 is lighting and particle effects. The explosions in Crysis 2 are awesome. The emp blast effect from the huge tank Ceth was particularly awesome. If Crytek didn’t make this game multiplat and just concentrated on one system. Whatever system it would’ve been Crytek’s game would be the best looking game on it.
Sound – Overall good sound design and music. Once you get past some weird sound glitches the soundtrack is pretty good. Dramatic orchestra music coupled with really nice standard music that fits the action and created a good gaming atmosphere. The voice acting and dialog was done well also. The character i like the most was Prophet (that guy just seemed real).
Gameplay – This is what i knew would either break it or make Crysis 2 great. Crysis 2 is like playing Crysis, Call of Duty and Halo combined and guess what? Its flat out entertaining. The gameplay is still centered around the usage of the nanosuit. If you don’t use the nanosuit you will die often. I played the Playstation 3 version so the controls deive from the Duel Shock 3 in this review. The nanosuit functions are used differently this time around. Instead of selecting “strength” it happens automatically when you sprint, jump or grab an object. Stealth and armor are selected with the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons. Using your armor and stealth are the most important functions imo.
You can survey the battlefield anytime by using your visor that points out enemies to mark on the map as well ammo crates. You also have a thermal visor you must use in certain chapters of Crysis 2 to see enemies in dark areas where no light is present. New to Crysis 2 is the sweet slide and shoot technique much like the one from Vanquish. Upgrading your nanosuit is also another added new feature in Crysis 2. You can upgrade your nanosuit which you couldn’t do in the first. You can upgrade your stealth to recharge faster and last longer. You can unlock the powerful air stomp technique as well others. You gain unlock points by collecting plasma material from the Ceth after you kill them. The plasma turns into points which overtime lets you unlock stronger nanosuit powers. If you want a powerful nanosuit, make sure you kill plenty of Ceth.
The guns are modable like in the first game as well. You can choose add ons like reflex sites, silencers, iron sites, scopes, grenade option and others. There was a cool new gun in the game. The prototype microwave gun the cooks enemies inside out. There wasn’t many big boss fights in Crysis 2 but the ones you do fight you have to use all your nanosuit abilities or else you won’t last long. Only two or three vehicle sections and on rail shooting missions are in Crysis 2. The levels are much more linear. Overall, the gameplay is still “Crysis” albeit with smaller vertical levels and more emphasis.
Replayability – The single player campaign will last you over ten hours alone. The multiplayer unlock and and upgrade system is similar to Call of Duty. What all of the other online multiplayer games don’t have is the nanosuit. The nanosuit really makes this game’s multiplayer shine and have legs. Most matches are 4 on 4 or 8 on 8 depending on the gamemode. Not much lag and starting and finding matches doesn’t take long. Overall, i really enjoy the multiplayer of Crysis 2 and plan to keep playing it regularly. Crytek is supporting Crysis 2’s multiplayer with new DLC map packs as well.
Final Verdict – Crytek wasn’t going to be able to please all factions equally by going multiplatform. Crysis 2 isn’t a genre defining game like Crysis. Crysis 2 has a few bugs, glitches, not so great ai and some graphical issues. Even with all of the negatives its still a great game. The single player campaign is the highlight of Crysis 2 with a deep addicting multiplayer you shouldn’t pass on.
