Why would the scope on my air rifle break?

1) I аm teaching someone tο shoot a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 rifle wіth a Weaver 3x offset mount fοr deer season.

2) Thе person іѕ recoil sensitive, аnd ѕο I аm using аn air rifle thаt іѕ аn exact duplicate οf a .30-30 rifle.

3) Thіѕ іѕ very convenient, bесаυѕе wе саn shoot thе air rifle rіght іn mу backyard. I hаνе аn οld lot, long, long, whісh dates back tο thе time whеn mοѕt people іn mу neighborhood kept vegetable gardens. Alѕο, I sort οf live іn a ghetto, ѕο nο one much cares whаt уου dο. Alѕο, thе backstop іѕ аn οld garage/shed whісh іѕ falling іntο thе ground, ѕο іf іt takes a few pellet mаrkѕ, I don’t care.

4) I hаd аn οld Weaver (Sears) 3x scope thаt wаѕ extra. Mу Dad probably bουght іt іn thе 1960’s. Mу father really liked low power scopes аnd hе hаd аn extra one іn a large chest οf hіѕ hunting stuff I gοt. I bουght mounts аnd rifle fοr thе air rifle аnd wіth ѕοmе Loc-Tite, mounted thе scope myself.

5) Thе rifle worked реrfесtlу аnd wаѕ a grеаt training device fοr thе .30-30 rifle. Bυt now thе scope brοkе. Thе horizontal line, јυѕt brοkе inside thе scope. I don’t understand. Whу wουld a scope designed tο withstand thе blast οf a high powered rifle, brеаk οn аn air rifle?

  1. The Ghost of Harrison Bergeron says:

The recoil moment in an air rifle is backwards (i. e, forward) from that of a normal rifle. To put it in simpler terms, the scope is designed to be slammed backwards, not forward.

edit: Yes, it could have broken for any number of reasons. Usually though, the simplest reason is the most likely.

  2. Zachary says:

Yes the recoil is opposite of that of a normal cartridge powered rifle. However

If it was bought in the 60s any number of things may have happened to it since then.

How did it break, was it just broken one day when you went to go use it or what?

It is possible to drop a scope and not break it(weakening the internal structure)

Most likely because it is not a air rifle scope though.

  3. Cubby says:

Somewhere along the line you or someone dropped it, kicked it or bumped it. If you send it back to Weaver, they will fix it!

  4. JOSH 4.0 says:

The first guy got it right. You being so wise, should have known this.

I highly doubt that it will be warranted.

  5. muledeer270 says:

I bought a Centerpoint 4×15x40 Mil-dot scope and asked the manufacture if air rifles are harder on high end scopes i. e. Leupold, Redfield, Weaver here what they sent to me.
    Dear Customer,

Yes, spring piston air rifles do tend to destroy normal scopes, since they have both forward and reverse recoil. Any scope that you see on the site is specially made for air rifles. If you have any other questions, please feel free to let us know.

    Thanks,

I was wondering do air rifles put more force on a scope than a regular rifle like say a 300 Weatherby, my cousin does not believe me can you answer this question? and are centerpoint scopes a good scope for a air rifle?

this is the Pyramid air website

  6. Rooster Pickins says:

Cubby is right on spot. Weaver will fix it for a nominal fee. I had an old 4 power fog up on me. It was at least 25 years old they fixed it up for 25 bucks that included shipping.

  7. .22 BMG says:

because you were using it for something other than shooting. It is in a cylinder shape.

  8. Cutie Pie says:

Spring piston air rifles have a very sharp forward impact when the piston reaches the end of its travel. While the total force is much less than the recoil of a high powered rifle, the shock is too sharp for the scope to handle.

Either that or Opie Taylor dropped it when you weren’t looking.

  9. gamoNcrosman says:

Double Recoil. Most scopes are built to handle backward recoil as shot from a firearm. Spring piston rifles have forward and rearward recoil. . . . that can even break high-end scopes. Some brands are made for only rifles and some for airguns. And some are made for both.

And since your`s are from the 60`s. . . . . maybe it was it`s time to go also.

  10. dumdum says:

Two reasons- a standard high power rifle scope is not designed to withstand the different recoil vibrations of a BB gun. The other reason it was just as likely old age as anything else. But most scope manufacturers will fix the problem for a nominal fee, but is the scope even worth the small fee. ? That would be up to you.

  11. Jeff says:

    reverse recoil.

Teach your student iron sights. . . that is the core skill for any progressive skills you need to teach later

Check around the internet. . . there are several shops that can replace the reticle and re seal that old Weaver
