the 308 was developed as a sniper round so it will be able to shoot farther than you and the accuracy should be good but ive never owned or shot 1 and mossberg has always made a reliable gun in my opinion

now that’s a unique rifle, you don’t see manny mossberg 100″s with the works.
I’d buy it, it looks like a benchrest/varmint style rifle, good for long range shooting.

The gun you are looking is an incredible value, and the listed price is half of other guns in its class, with its same features. Mossberg bolt actions are known for having accurate actions, and the . 308 winchester is an inherently accurate cartridge. In long range shooting competitions, the . 308 can be effectively used out to 1000 yards. I have heard that the ATR models have a parkerized finish on the barrel and action, the same finish used by the military and known for being impervious to weather. Very good choice

As for the Mossberg ATR 100 I personally have never had the fortune to shoot one. However I did carry a Mossberg 500 in 12 ga while doing boardings for five years in US Coast Guard. I only needed to fire it once and that was after the shooting started and I had dropped into the Bering Sea. I fired 5 of seven rounds and had no problem with the gun at all. This is while floating in a dry suit aiming at the railing to keep heads down. It worked in what I consider to be absolutely adverse conditions. I own and carry a Mossberg 20 ga for home defense, dove hunting, quail hunting, deer hunting and trap shooting. I have never seen a bad product by Mossberg only badly treated weapons. So hope that helps.

The Mossberg 100-ATR is an economy rifle. . . . Its a decent rifle that will easily take deer and other animals successfully. . . .

On the other hand it is not a competition grade target rifle. . . . . . . Its got plenty of accuracy for hunting but if you want consistent sub MOA groups at long distances it will disappoint. . . .

Two of my friends bought these rifles at the same time and I have shot them both. They didn’t get the Night Train version but the scoped combination version. . . . The only real difference is my pals rifles didn’t come with the bipod and that’s not a big deal. . . .

Here’s my opinion after spending a little time with these rifles. . . . They are not super accurate. . . . For hunting they are excellent. . . . If you want to take a deer at 400 yards then maybe not. . . .

I target shoot more than I hunt. . . I also shoot at steel plates – 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch steel to 300 yards — These rifles will do that. . . If you want to make quarter size holes at 200 yards it ain’t going to happen. . . . .

This model here was on sale in my area for $329. . . . Scope included. . . You cant really beat that!. . .

If you want to get some trigger time in on the cheap these rifles are a decent choice. . . . I should point out that . 308 ammunition in bulk is pretty cheap. . . So getting a rifle chambered in . 308 makes good financial sense. . . .

I personally find the Mossberg very clunky and the action just doesn’t feel right. I do hear better things about their accuracy. The scope on the Mossberg isn’t something you will want to trust for long. In the same price range you should be able to find a Savage 110 or 10 Model or something similar. Savage has been great for out of box accuracy and the Accutrigger is pretty decent. Savage does have specific tactical and varmint rifles available but they can be pricey. Another option is the Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard family. You can get them from Wal Mart for less than $400. Howa builds the Vanguard for Weatherby and Howa Actions are well know for use in long range competitions. I have seen Howa 1500 Howe Stocked with overgrip AND a Nikko-Sterling scope for less than $500.
The ATR is a good yeoman or entry level rifle. But even with all the bells and whistles it is more like a Chevy with an upgraded stereo than an Accura with a good suspension package. I’m very fond of the Tikka T3s now, and you might want to invest that little bit more. I always see guns as investments, even if they don’t increase in price, and you will never fault yourself for buying quality. Compare the Mossberg with the Howa/Vanguard, and then cycle a Tikka and feel the difference.
