Hey аll im thinking аbουt buying a remington model 700 sps. I want tο know whаt caliber i ѕhουld gеt. Sο far ive bееn thinking аbουt getting іt іn thе 30-06 caliber bυt idk. i wіll mοѕt lіkеlу bе shooting long ranges јυѕt аt targets fοr fun. I аlѕο mіght bе hunting wіth mу dad occasionally. аnу suggestions? аlѕο іf аnу one саn recommend a scope fοr mе thatd bе helpful

a 30-06 would be just fine for that, or even a . 270. as for a scope, i would go with a leupold or nikon with 9x magnification
. 270!!! real versitile, fairly inexpensive, extremely flat trajectory over long ranges. Can take small elk, black bear, deer, even larger hogs. Overkill for coyote, but it works unless you want a pelt.
the . 30-06 is very versitile too, you cant go wrong either way.
i wouldn’t buy the Remington. have you looked at the Marlin XL7 or XS7? i would recommend a Marlin over a Remington any day. i have a Marlin XL7w. the 270 with a leupold VXII scope and i love it. very dependable, very accurate.
. 270 would be good for long range. . 243 is another good round, although it tops out around 300 – 350 yards.
If you will be using it mostly for targets then consider getting your rifle chambered in . 308. . . . . 308 is inexpensive in bulk. . . . . Take a look. . . .

30-06, 270 and other cartridges are $20 a box on up. . . A bad ammo choice will cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars more over the life of the rifle. . . Why go broke having fun?. . . .
Its perfect for deer and elk. . . Its also hugely popular with target shooters. . . .

Scope?. . . You didn’t tell us your budget. . . . I have one of these on my Remington 700 VTR. . . . its a decent product. . . . .

I’d have to ask what and where you’re hunting. Southern whitetail, a . 270 is ideal, or maybe a 7mm08. Much bigger, and that 30-06 is probably better. My 700 CDL is 7mm Mag, but I handload it down for whitetail, up for long range targets or (someday soon I hope) an elk hunt up north. If I didn’t handload, I would have happily gone with the 30-06, because ammo is relatively cheap compared to others, and is available in great variety. It has plenty of distance and power, and although its trajectory is not the flattest ever, it’s still a very straight-shooting round for its low-moderate recoil.
When I was looking at scopes for mine, I set my sights on the Bushnell Elite 4200 with illuminated reticle. Instead, my dealer gave me an incredible price on a Leupold, which I knew was too good to pass up. Both brands are great, but Leupolds are often priced well above their worth. I hear Nikon makes a great scope as well (they also make very fancy camera lenses, so they know a thing or two about optics).
Good luck. –Tex
Edit: I will second the . 308 suggestion. . 308 is MUCH cheaper than the others (military surplus 7. 62×51 NATO), and every bit as accurate and good for hunting. Why didn’t I think of that?
I would look at the under appreciated 451 Zellman cartridge.
* The most Popular Caliber all Around the World is the 30-06 whether Target Shooting, or for Big Game Hunting. *
