    They’re both good.

It comes down to your preferences for either a detachable magazine or a tubular one.

the marlin 60 is known to jam, and the tube magazine easily damaged by rough handling. it can also be a PITA to load the magazine.

the marlin 795 uses hard to find magazines that are also quite expensive. capacity if 7 or 10 rounds. the rifle also uses a cheap polymer receiver. the scope rail (3/8″ dovetail) is also made of plastic, which isn’t as good as a metal rail.

but both as good, accurate, well made rifles.

my first rifle was a Marlin 925r, bolt action . 22lr. it uses the same magazines as the marlin 795 does. the 925 is probably the most accurate, relaible, well made, but it uses cheap plastic internal parts- such as the magazine well assembly. some small (but expensive) part broke last year on my rifle, it’s not a big deal, just annoying to hand-extract spent cases (its not the extractor claw). i got it for $150 at big 5 sporting goods in 2006. this rifle with the proper optics, ammo, and alot of practice it can do 1-2″ at 100 meters, hit a shotgun clay 5 time in a row at 200, hit a rabbit from 300, and can reach all the way out to 400-500m (volley fire/plinking). with some practice you can shoot a bolt action just as fast as a semiautomatic.

I own 3 795’s for my sons and have owned 2 Model 60’s. Both, as everyone states, are excellent weapons. I also own a Ruger 10/22. If you can stretch the difference buy the Ruger but, we are not here to talk about that.

To that end, the 795 might have a few advantages. It’s magazine fed so if you do have spare magazines, the reload is real quick. The bolt release is reliable and easy. One sweep of your right thumb and the first round in the magazine for a reload will chamber easily. Also, easier to clean the action, bolt face, and chamber in generalasthe magazine opens the area up a bit for your.

The barell lengths I believe are a bit different but, both are so accurate it hardly matters. I like the synthetic stocks as there is no maintenance. The magazine has a good, positive lockup with no rattle so it’s reliable. Magazines are relatively cheap. . . I think I got the last two, nickel plated, for $15 a piece. Not bad.

I’ve fired multiple types of ammo through each with no failures. To be sure, the Model 60 has been around forever and is a solid, reliable platform as well. Reloading is not all tha bad, tilt the barrel away from you about 70 degrees from 90 and pull the rod completely out. Drop the cartridges straight down. I think they hold 12? 14? Can’t remember.

Anyway, they are both fine. I just like the 795 for it’s “carbine” like feel which is easy to swivel at the shoulder for quick shot placement. Just a preference.

Look at the bright side, either one will NOT dissappoint so you CAN’T make a bad choice. Buy the one YOU like and never look back. If you get real bored, save up and buy the other later.

    Good luck.
