    Ruger 10/22 with a Nikon 3-9×40MM scope. . . . .

This rifle is on sale in my area for $189. . . .

    Scope. . . . . $149 to your door. . . .

Why not just keep the bolt action and put a scope on it ? It should be more accurate than most . 22 semi automatics on the market.

Regardless, the Marlin Model 60 is a tried and proven accurate semi automatic . 22 rifle. Better, as in more accurate, than the Ruger 10/22 IMO.

I gave Robert H and METROPOL a thumbs up apiece. You can go with either. The Marlin is probably a bit more acurate due to the microgroove rifling. The Ruger probably has slighly better workmanship.

try to find a used ruger 10/22. if you can’t find one, get the mossberg 702 plinkster. there are two styles. one is similar to the ruger 10/22 and the other style looks like an m16. do NOT buy the m16. they’re a prototype weapon if anything. everyone i know who has one, even my little brother, has perpetual problems with misfeeds and jams and double feeds and shells not ejecting from the chamber. you probably have a 1 in 5 chance of getting a jam. that common.

so get a used ruger 10/22 with a 4x mil dot scope to judge distance or a mossberg 702. NOT THE M16 MODEL!!!

Ok, more or less here are your semi auto options for under $200 (so you have money for an optic).

All prices are based on doing some internet research and are approximate:
    Ruger 10/22 Carbine – $200
    Remington 597 – $170
    Marlin 795 – $135
    Marlin 60 – $135
    Savage 64 – $120
    Mossberg 702 Plinkster – $120

All of these are the prices for synthetic stock either blue or stainless versions. All of these are comparable products. So, for me from a features standpoint the 10/22 and the 597 both have flush mount 10 round magazines. The 597 has a last shot hold open which is an extremely nice feature in a . 22. The 795, 64 and 702 are all single stack 10 round magazine rifles, all of which have the last shot hold open. The 10/22 and the 597 you can get higher capcity mags on.

For me the combination of these would point to the 597. Now, from an accuracy standpoint all of these guns have strong advocates. Given the variety of . 22LR ammunition that is out there, any of these can be quite accurate rifles. Personally, I’d probably pick which ever you like the look of best.

Now from an optic standpoint, if you are really looking to wring the rifle out and reach out to get the bunnies I would expect you would want something like a 3×9 or 4×12 variable. Also I’d be inclined to say I’d look for at least a 32 and more likely a 40mm lens.

So, in the 3-9×40 or 4-12×40 and call it $100 – $150 I happen to like the options from:
Leapers, Hawke and Bushnell and have them on some of my guns. Bushnell is a little higher in price compared to the others, I think their “eyebox” is a little bigger than the Hawke optic I have which is part of the design, but any of these will wring out the gun. In particular, I pick optics that allow me to adjust parallax down to very short ranges. Because the focus at 100 yards and the focus at 10 yards isn’t the same. So, I intentionally sort through and pick scopes that are parallax adjustable to 10 yards or less. Many cheaper . 22 scopes will be fixed parallax at 50 or 100 yards.

So, after all that what would I suggest?
Remington 597, Bushnell Trophy 4-12×40, and Leapers Medium or high profile scope rings.

If you are careful, you should be able to get into that for right around $300. Swap out the optic for the Leapers 3-12×40 AO Mil-dot RGB Zero optic and you definitely can.

Im not going to jump on the Marlin Model 60 bandwagon. . i dont see what people like about them. Who cares if they are more accurate is a pop can or a squirrel going to notice the accuracy difference?

Get a 10/22 Then when you get bored with it you can pimp it out and add stocks, barrels, receivers, fancy target iron sights, big barrels, small barrels. big magazines and small magazines.

The options are endless what you can do with a 10/22

As far as scope. You will do just fine with about anything. . . as long as it isnt a BSA
