Is my AR 15 Tactical Or Tacky?

I οwn a AR 15 556 .233 Olympic arms M4 style carbine wіth a stainless steel barrel аnd unfortunately a NON removable A2 handle. More disappointing thе iron sights wеrе οff. I рυt a scope οn thе top οf thе handle using a rail thаt screws іntο thе handles drain hole. thе scope sits up high аnd looks very different frοm thе ar 15’s out аt thе range. Opinions? іѕ thіѕ Tacky οr acceptable.
Tο аnѕwеr ѕοmе qυеѕtіοnѕ thе warranty wіll take care οf thе sights, thеу аrе οff bаd, even аt battle sight zero. iv’e fired іn a lot οf A2 sights tο know theres something wrοng wіth thе front аnd rear sights.
fact іѕ i wanted a scope bυt thе handle dοеѕ nοt seperate frοm thе upper reciever уου hаνе tο purchace a nеw upper reciever tο mаkе іt a flat rail.
i don’t hаνе $300-$800 fοr a nеw upper reciever ѕο i рυt a scope οn thе handle аnd рlаn tο gеt a laser fοr up tο 50 yards. i јυѕt don’t see a lot οf scopes mounted tο thе handle аnd wanted ѕοmе input οn hοw іt appeals visually

    Only hits on target count.

    How well does it shoot?

Even a pink colored “Hello Kitty” AR-15 is to be respected when the muzzle is pointed at oneself.

What matters is that you’re satisfied with it.

sounds goofy, but your making it sound goofy. idk.

the question you should be asking yourself is “does it do the job?” and if so the its not tacky. besides i’ve seen AR-15s like that. its just another of the countless variations.

    I have the Olympic K3B-A2 16″.

Its not tacky, its just not the best platform to mount a scope on. Bore axis is too far below scope. Making shots at different distances harder.

My scope had to be mounted to the handle as well, It really wasn’t what I wanted, so I had an upper made.
YHM A3, 16″ stainless White Oak Armament bull barrel, YHM spectre length 4 rail free-float. Rock River bolt and carrier. And VLTOR lo-pro gas block.

I don’t know who quoted the exorbitant amount of $300-800 to replace your upper, but that’s flat out rape.
You should be able to get a gunsmith to replace your A2, with an A3 upper for less than $150.

(as for whomever gave the thumbs down, you must not know a dang thing about AR’s!)

I think it’s. . . . . Justifiable, as long as it shoots well. Tacky rears it’s ugly head when wannabes strap, screw, and slap every light, laser, scope, grip, etc. they can on it. And then add a bipod.

You could have the ugliest AR on the planet, but if it shoots good, who really cares. An AR will never win a beauty pagent, because pretty doesn’t equal accurate. How does it shoot? Can you hit your target consistently? If you are happy with it’s performance, it really shouldn’t matter what anyone else has to say about it.

sights were off??? did you adjust them. . . front and rear?? Don’t fret on the fact that you have an a1/a2 style. . . . i find them to be quite more practical. the sights will always line up all you have to do is zero them in to your body and shooting style. As for the scope. . . . its not until recently that A3/A4 style uppers became really popular. They used A1/A2 styles with various types of scope for almost 2-3 decades. Hell, I have two AR-15s. One in an A1 upper and another in an A3 upper. I keep the carry handle on practically all the time on my A3 and have both my rifles co-witnessed with the carry handle adapter. I go out and line up next to people with 400-1000 scopes and shoot just as well if not better than many of them with my iron sights and my reflex sights.
eotechs are popular now. . . . not everyone in the military uses them. In fact, many units went away from them for cheaper more useful holo sights and reflex sights. . . . . not counting the ACOG obviously.

My advice, keep your rifle with iron sights. . . zero them in to you. . . zero them properly to you. . . . practice with iron sights A LOT. Once you feel fully confident being able to use nothing but iron sights, then move on to scopes. . . . . remember this. . . . red dots and holo scopes run on batteries. When batteries go bye bye its down to you and the ever present iron sights. Practice Practice Practice. Then dabble with the fancy stuff.

Is this firearm for you or to attempt to impress everyone else?
With the scope on, can you hit a soda can at 100 yards?
To join the “in crowd” you should have a Colt. . . .

  9. Exitwound says:

Iron sights, carrying handle, matte black finish are mil-spec.

  10. phound says:

Do you have matching upper and lower?

    Ok. . . . 1) Get a Flat Top

    or
    2) Get the iron sights fixed and sale the scope

    3) SALE the whole gun to sucker and get real M4 BUSHMASTER

  11. PurpleNurple says:

you should invest in a Trijicon ACOG scope. they have a dovetail mount that attatches right to the rear A2 sights and does not sit up so high, and it looks cool. they are very pricey tho.

  12. gtggaddis says:

    No, It’s not tacky.
If you want a flat top receiver it wouldn’t cost nowhere near $300. dollars.
I bought this one and put all the parts from my carry handle upper and it works great. Didn’t take long at all to put together.
I would suggest a AR-15 guide book first if you have never disassembled one though. 95 bucks, not bad.

  13. randy says:

    first, a stripped A4 flat top receiver is under $100. 00, I’ve seen then for $50. 00
second, the A2 and A3 style with handle are great firearms as well. Some people say that the scope sits too high to the line of the barrel and is hard to set up. I never found that to be true at all, I’ve built many of them in that configuration, just don’t mount some huge scope on it, when it is not needed. That looks dorky. A compact 4x or up to a 10x compact works just fine and looks classic on it. The only time I go with a bigger scope is on a “sniper” or varmint version with 24″ barrel etc. But a huge scope on an M4 version would look tacky.
    shoot safe

  14. Grizzly II says:

There is nothing ‘wrong with your ’scope setup, per se. The original Colt scope for the AR (M-16) ‘poodle shooter’, mil-spec factory equipment, was a 3x fixed tube mounted on a detachable ‘clip-on’ mount that hooked up exactly the way you described.
If you’re not happy with this set-up, complete flat-top uppers, ready to drop on are available from at least half-a-dozen sources, including Olympic, so you can mount any type scope you want. . .
