I wouldn’t use that for anything. A cheap pair of compact binoculars would be better, Bushnell and Simmons make decent binos in the $50 range. He’d probably like a good knife better, or a gift card to his favorite sporting goods store. You can get a duck call for that price as well.

That’s a monocular, as opposed to a set of binoculars.
It’s typically used for looking down range at your target, that’s what I use mine for, to some (limited) degree of success.
I hear (probably incorrectly) that hunters use them to spot game.
It seems to me a decent pair of binoculars would be better. Wider field of view, better, clearer image, etc.
Ammo is always a good stocking stuffer, as someone else suggested.
