The Romanian SKS is far more uncommon and therefore far more collectable than the dime-a-dozen Yugo! If you’re going to “bubba” one of them, do it to the Yugo one, but stay away from aftermarket detachable magazines. They’re all junk. None of them work worth a damn. And you’re not going to save much weight with a synthetic stock, either.
Tapco makes an excellent after market magazine, but I do agree the others are junk
Any mods you make to a SKS concerning after market stocks and hi-cap can be undone in minutes so the term bubba-ing does not really apply
A removed bayo can also be reattached with no problems
Just be sure to keep the parts in a safe place
I put my Yugo 59 in one of the T-6 stocks and liked it well enough
By keeping the old parts it actually added to the value
If I had left it stock I would have limited the buyer field if I had made permanent mods I would have lowered the value
I haven’t tried the Monte Carlo in a SKS but I did have one on a Mosin and it really changed the gun into a pleasant shooting rifle
Don’t like the Varmint style at all
I’m also glad to see that you not have delusional expectations on the guns accuracy but I think 2 to 4 inch group would closer
Mine were all consistently around 3 inch guns on average
The receiver mount scope are infamous for a wandering zero
Kalinka and Sportsman guide sell a correct side mount for the gun for about $30 and whatever it takes for you to have it mounted

I do agree with Doc about stripper clips
With minimal practice they are much faster reload than the duckbilled SKS mags
I got mine most for looks with the T-6
I got the T-6 because I just didn’t like the feel of the original SKS stock
But later I found the $10 1 inch butt pad extensions and prefer them to the T-6
IMO, detachable magazines are more trouble than they are worth in an SKS.
The SKS detachable magazines are not a simple insert, pull the charging handle and shoot affairs. The detachable magazines have a long snout on the front that fits into the pivot point of the original non-detachable magazine. You must insert the snout, catch the pivot point and rock the magazine into place. In my experience, it is not enough faster than using stripper clips to charge the fixed magazine to be worth the effort. In fact, if you are dead set on detachable magazines, I have three or four 30 round magazines I will gladly sell you, send me an e-mail and we can discuss it.
My suggestion is to check into getting a 20 round fixed magazine from Cheaper Than Dirt, and get a bundle of stripper clips for fast reloads
While the military issue stock might be butt ugly, shoot the rifle to see how it feels before you go monkeying around with the stock. If it fits you, and does not produce added recoil, save your money for another project. If it shoots comfortably and accurately, you might consider doing nothing more than sanding and refinishing the original stock. If you really want a black plastic stock, get the one that appeals to you the most.
As for the scope, I believe mounting a scope on the receiver dust cover will be an exercise in futility. I also had an SKS rifle with a funky side scope mount that would never retain zero. If you really must scope your SKS, mount the scope on the barrel and use an extended eye relief scope. You will end up with a set up similar to to a Scout Rifle. The scope will be secure and with practice, fast to acquire.
Removing the bayonet will save some weight. But before you remove that bayonet lug, shoot the rifle for accuracy with and without the bayonet. I know that some of the Moisin Nagant Rifles really change their accuracy potential with and without the bayonet attached. Removing the bayonet and bayonet lug will not change it’s BATFE classification. In their opinion, it is an Evil Assault Rifle, whether it has a bayonet lug or not. Another argument for keeping the bayonet lug is that there are several bi-pods available that attache to the bayonet lug, so you might want to keep that option available.
As for accuracy, who knows without shooting the rifle? I never bothered accuracy testing with the ChiCom SKS’s that I owned. As long as they’d bust a beer can on a fairly regular basis out to 100 yards, I was satisfied. I didn’t buy them for hunting, I got them for fun shooting.
