Here’s a good rule of thumb when buying optics for your favorite gun. . . you get what you pay for. Cheap scopes often have severe issues with reticles moving, optics clouding and tubes leaking, etc.

Nikon makes a very good scope in the $150 range that will probably outlast you. Stick with names you’ve heard of like Nikon, Simmons, Leupold, even Redfield has returned to us and most of these can be had in your price range new or used (Leupold).

One final note, don’t buy a scope you can’t look through before you pay for it.

What are you going to mount this scope on? Must it be a “tactical” scope?

In the price range that you are asking about: I have a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9×40 with BDC that works well. (About $160. ) It’s a “good” but not “great” optic, but for the price I don’t think you can do much better.

For a bit less you can get the Pro Staff in 2-7×32. (About $140. )

Speaking with the bitter voice of past experience: I HATE CHEAP RIFLE SCOPES!

Everything I own is from Leupold. Don’t they have something you can afford? The FX-II series is highly regarded by those who own them; and they ain’t a lot of money.

4×32 is good for maybe 200 yards. That is it. If you want a decent scope start looking in the $300 to $500 price range.

My Remington 700 VLS varmint rifle in 223 wears a Nikon monarch 6. 5-20×42mm. My Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit Rifle wears a Nikon Monarch 6-24×50mm Both scopes cost me $550. My 308 bench rifle has a Bushnell elite 4200 6-24×40mm and shoots . 2″ 5 shot groups at 100 yards and will hold sub 1″ groups out to 400 yards.

I don’t even put 4x scopes on my rimfires. But then I am varmint hunter and I shoot small animals at 400 to 500 yards almost every weekend.

Take a look at Weaver scopes great quality for the price. Bushnell Elite 3200 are a great scope for the money. Sightron SII scopes are also great scopes for the money. Nikon Monarch are as well. I had a Leupold and it was JUNK wouldn’t hold zero fogged up all the time eye relief changed every time I adjusted the power setting. After that I swore off them. For my money I will go with Bushnell Elite 4200 or Nikon Monarchs.
