Welcome to world of “Scout” style shooting and hunting!

I built a similar setup about five years ago and my M44 “Scout” has become my favorite hog carbine in the scrub brush of west Texas and has ‘made bacon’ many times.

I was very uncertain about the forward mounted scope concept. . . . it’s quite different obviously. But once I tried it and quickly got the hang of it, I was hooked. Col. Jeff Cooper and friends really were on to something here and I’m a big fan. Also, I’ve converted a few friends to it and they like it too, even putting “Scout mount” scopes on the old Winchester 94 lever guns, which is another quite natural application.

Being a cheap bastard and since I was using an untested $29 carbine with a Darrell’s Scout Mount, I started out with used cheap Chinese NCStar 2. 5x LER scope that I got at a gun show for $20. New they are under $40 It worked surprisingly well in the Scout setup, but I cannot recommend this scope as I quickly moved up in quality once the concept was proved to me. I put out for the $100 on the Simmons Prohunter 2x handgun scope and it is perfect for me. You can go up to Burris and Leupold for a few hundred. . . . by why spend so much on a Mosin?

I have also seen the Weaver handgun scope and it looks very nice, as good as the Burris for only about $150.

The NCStar wasn’t horrible, but I have heard quite a few stories of duds. I still have it actually on a friend’s Buckmark and it is holding up quite well.

Be sure to get a good “Y” sling. . . part of the Scout concept is a sling that can hold your gun steady and tight while scanning the brush for game. . . . . it really makes a difference.

Also, I’ve hunted with more than one Mosin and the Sellier and Bellot soft points have been the best factory hunting rounds I have found, althougt a reloading friend and I are working up some customs for this fall.

    You’ve got options.

Firstly, Leupold makes a scope dedicated for use with Scout rifles.

    Leupold “FX-II 2. 5×28mm IER Scout”
Intermediate Eye Relief Scout rifle scope.

The next option would be to use a different type of scope. Something like a Bushnell Holo-sight, a Trijicon Reflex sight or an Eotech HOLOgraphic Weapon Sight.
